Coaches Comments

West Region Tournament

I thought we struggled throughout the tournament to get the  offense going- the game seemed difficult for us at times.  I liked the  character we showed in the Hazen/Beulah game- tied at 3 going into the  3rd period- we really put pressure on them all period. We were able to  get 2 but could have had more.  I liked our effort on the final day  against Bismarck High.  Our lack of depth doesn't lend itself to being a  great 3-day team but our kids really battled hard. We missed some good
opportunities and against a good team like that you have to take  advantage of those when you get them.

It was an awfully fun team to be around throughout the season.  I think we overachieved in a lot of ways but came up a little short of getting  back to the state tournament.

 Post-season awards-
 All-WDA Team-
Harrison Aide & Cody Longie were both unanimous picks.

Vs Minot, Bismarck Century & Bismarck High

Comments- It was a tough week for us in the loss column.  We played the
top 3 teams in the region and were not able to squeeze out a win in any of
 the games.

We really made if tough on ourselves in the MInot game- we had
trouble staying out of the penalty box.  It's tough to gain momentum from
 there.

In the Century game we kept crawling back in it but could not
sustain momentum- we got it even twice but they got 2 back on us in both
 cases.

I though we really had trouble with Bismarck High- I'm not sure we
had the momentum at any point in that game.

Vs Mandan & W Fargo

2/3/2013 It was a good weekend in the sense that we got the region win on Friday night against Mandan.  However it was disappointing that to finish the weekend with a loss to West Fargo.

It  took us a little while to get going on Friday night against Mandan but I thought we did a good job of staying after them and eventually started taking care of their opportunities.

West Fargo did a better job than we did coming out and dictating the tempo and style of play.- they got after us pretty good  early and we took some sloppy penalties that did not help us.

Weekend Stats
Vs Bismarck Century

1/26/2013

This was a big win for us on the road against a good team. We  did a good job in the first half or the game of controlling the puck and  playing our type of game.  I thought we survived their pressure in the 3rd  period and capitalized on a couple of real good chances.  Andrew Hill had  2 big goals for us in the 3rd period- he played solid for us all night.

Riley Monson had his most consistent effort of the year- he made the big  saves when we needed it.

Bottineau Rugby defeat Williston 6 - 3.

It was nice to get through this stretch of the season- with the  make-up game with Williston we ended up playing 4 games in 5 days.  We  were awfully tired at the end of that stretch.  I thought we competed hard  in that stretch of games.  As a teams we were able to pick up 4 wins in  the region- it definitely helps us out in the standings.

We do need to  get back to the practice rink for a couple of days to work on a few
 things.

Coaches Corner

Vs Hazen/Beulah & Dickinson

I didn't think we were real sharp on the weekend but it was a nice road trip picking up 2 region wins.  I thought we seemed a little sluggish both days- we seemed to let the play come to us rather than  dictating play.  I thought both of our opponents played hard against us.
The win in Dickinson was a good win for the team. It's good for the guys to have to play in a tight game like that and make a play in the last 10 seconds to win it.

.

Vs Boissevain MB

It was a good game for us in that we really got to play a lot of players
more than normal.  We tried to give our 2nd and 3rd units a lot of ice
time as the game played out.  We play a lot of games in the next few weeks
so this was good for us.  Wyatt Johnson scored a couple of real nice
goals- he's really figuring out his role on the powerplay.

.

COMMENTS: We had an excellent weekend on the road- we were very
happy to pick up 2 region wins on the road.  I thought we played with good
energy in Jamestown- we moved the puck real well at times. We only had 12
skaters for the weekend so it made it a little tough with not a lot of
 depth.

The game in Mandan was definitely not our best.  I thought we were
very sluggish.  We looked like a tired hockey team.  But we were  disciplined and stayed out of the penalty box.  We made a few plays
offensively and did a pretty good job of limiting their opportunities.
Definitely a good road weekend.

Comments-  It was a tough weekend from the standpoint that we were
not able to pick up a win.  We had penalty trouble both nights and
made it tough on ourselves.  We have to try to stay out of the
penalty box- and make it easier on ourselves.

STATE SCORING LEADERS

Jan. 29 - Three Bottineau Braves are part of the top ND state high school hockey scoring leaders with Seth Serhienko leading in the state with 43 total points, including 14 goals & 29 assists. Logan Millican is just 2 points behind with a total of 41 overall points, including 26 goals & 15 assists.  Freshman Harrison Aide is not far behind, ranked # 4 in the state with 35 points with 17 goals & 18 assists.

Serhienkos fine eye for the game depicts that the game isn’t just about individuals placing the puck into the net, it is more about how that puck gets there.  Younger players & coaches, should take note & capitalize on watching how players can work together to achieve results in the winning department by following the adage PASS SHOOT SCORE.

Don’t forget about the defensive play.  Teams can’t win by scoring alone.  Bottineau’s goalies have been holding their own with a lot of hard work from the defensive men helping them manage the score.  Defense is an often overlooked team play aspect.  The Bottineau Braves goalies Cody Brooks & Michael  Kornkven are both ranked in the top 12.

Good Luck to the Braves & coach Hoff this weekend against Century !!!
PASS, SHOOT, SCORE !!!
