Atom Season Summary (3-16-07)
Success for a season should not be measured in wins and losses, but rather measured in the improvement of individual players, relative to their skill level at the start of the season. All Atom players improved during the year. Statistically, the 2006-07 Bottineau Atoms finished the season with 18 wins, 7 loses, and 1 tie. Team highlights included winning the Rugby International Tournament, a second place finish in the Bottineau Invitational Tournament, a third place finish in the Minot Squirt Tournament of Champions, and Winner of the SWRHL B Tournament. During the first half of the season, the Braves were an inconsistent team. However, down the stretch, Bottineau lost only twice in 13 games. This success resulted from improved team chemistry and an overall increase in effort. Our season culminated in a parent-player game, highlighted by Coach Marsden’s play between the pipes (the parents squeaked out a victory).
Individual highlights were many – here are just a few tidbits. Goaltenders Riley Monson and Braden Pewe alternated games throughout the season. Each posted a shutout and both significantly improved their save percentage over the 2005-06 season. Monson, Pewe, Bedlion, Hill and Grant played in every game. All players got on the score sheet. Noah Grant, Luke Amsbaugh, and Ashley Blue led the team in scoring as forwards. Cody Bedlion and Andrew Hill added points from the blue line. Ashley Blue scored 6 goals in a playoff game against Melita. Andrew Hill was Mr. Versatility, regularly playing every position, including one game as goalie (it was a shutout!). Cody Belion was a rock at defense (he also had the most penalties for body contact). Jacie Ceglowski was named player of the game during a 3 point performance in the Rugby Tournament. Jarret Obenchain scored his first goal of the season during the last game of the season – he nearly suffocated at the bottom of the pile from the congratulations of his teammates. Many, many other contributions cannot be listed here but were recognized by coaches and parents.
We would like to thank Troy Hill for an outstanding job as Team Manager, and also Robin Hill for her efforts in fund raising during the Bottineau Tournament. We would also like to thank all the parents who volunteered for tasks during games and for supporting players and coaches throughout the season. Last, we would like to thank all the payers for their outstanding effort throughout the season – enjoy the summer!
Sincerely, Coaches Marsden and Grant
